Private School Jobs

"Where do I look for boarding school jobs?" "How do I begin my search for a job in private schools?"

Two questions that we're asked on a regular basis by recent or soon to be college grads looking to begin a teaching career.

You'll want to consider working with one or more of the agencies dedicated to boarding school & private school placement. These agencies work with schools to match teachers and open positions. Many services contract with the school and collect their fees from the school rather than the candidates.

If you're interested in researching positions independently, we recommend visiting school web sites since a number of them list open positions. Also spend time on school association & promotional sites that maintain job boards.

Below is a list of agencies, school associations, colleges/universities with private school training programs and web services to research as you begin your search.

You can also listen to a podcast that explores finding a job in a private school or boarding school. Bill Lyons of Independent-Thinking spoke with our Boarding School Podcast about the process.

  • Maria, The best, most direct way into boarding school employment is through one of the placement agencies. The agencies work with schools to find and filter appropriate candidates. Registering and working with agencies is free to candidate; schools pay the agencies for the work. Here's a list of the 'big three' boarding school agencies: http://www.carneysandoe.com/ http://www.ies-search.org/ http://www.educationgroup.com/ Best wishes in your search, B. • It is nice that you have posted these jobs that are available. I got lucky with my job, I just emailed the school and asked of they were hiring and they responded and had me come in for a working interview. After the interview they put me in as an intern till I had finished my training then offered me a 2 year contract. Keep your chins up and keep trying your hardest and good luck Boarding Schools, August 4, 2011 9:42 AM
  • Is it appropriate to use multiple placement agencies? Or must one remain loyal to one service? L. Szczesny, December 9, 2011 12:29 PM
  • L. Thanks for reading. Unless things have changed unbeknownst to me, registering with/using multiple agencies is perfectly acceptable practice. We experienced this situation all the time when I was an administrator. If you receive notice of the same opening from more than one, you (the applicant) are supposed to be straight-up with the agencies and tell them that you received the opening notice from one agency before the other. The school has a check/balance on the back side side having listed the job with one agency before another and/or receiving dated lists of applicants. This allows the agency to pay the fee to the proper agency. As always, the answer is honesty. B. Fisher, December 12, 2011 10:15 AM
