So you are telling me they gave you an on the spot decision? Please nobody knows if they are accepted until March 10 and thats all boarding schools across the country. And my daughter scored the same score as your son at age 10. my daughter is 11 in 8th grade but taking 11th grade classes in public high school so the same top notch schools flew all the way to indiana to see her and want her to but we all know acceptance letters for boarding schools dont come out until 3/10 period!!!!! cindy jones, January 2, 2009 8:52 AM

  • IT"S CALLLED PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of you think your kids are so amazing when there probably not. And you can get a perfectly good education at a public school. If you can't afford it, don't do it. This is why are country has so much debt, people spending money on things they can't afford. Florence, March 19, 2009 5:43 PM
  • Sometimes we as parents has to whats best for our kids....this is to Florence,,well Florence how about me and mine, we live in Detroit....you all know and have be hearing whats be going on in Detroit. The people here have stole our childrens money for school and now we are in a huge debt...they are now causing our children here to suffer by closing all the Detroit public schools...so my husband and i have no choice but to do whats best for or 4 boys.... and that is to send them to private school...and I for one is not ashame because all 3 of my older children have made the grades and deserve to go and if that means that if we as a family has to eat sandwiches ( not Peanut butter of course) than as a family thats what we will do....so many people have messed up others life with there greed and have left others to do what they have to do ( the right thing of course) to survive in this world. La'Tice, March 25, 2009 5:52 AM
  • Florence: If you think you can get a decent education at public schools, then you must live in a state with very good public schools. Unfortunately, there are quite a few states with horrible education systems. Victoria, March 26, 2009 9:28 AM
  • I am a single parent of a 14 year old. I do not feel that public schools can offer him the education that he needs to succeed in life. He attends a private Christian school that requires the best from all of the students. I am seeking information on where I can recieve financial assistance to help with his tuition. melba, March 27, 2009 6:50 PM
  • Hey Florence If you are trying to prove that public school provide a good education you went about it the wrong way. Example of how public school failed you: "All of you think your kids are so amazing when there probably not." There in this sentence should be spelled they're. "This is why are country has so much debt," This should be "this is why OUR country." Also you never start a sentence with "AND" You just prove why people are getting their children out of public school. You are taking more resources from the government by going to public school, who do you think pay all those teachers, supplies, sometimes lunch for your kids at the public school(That's right the government and other people's taxes). I have attended both public and private school in the US and swore that my children will never set foot in a public school. (By the way my 13 years old sister in private school corrected your mistakes) Rosie, March 29, 2009 7:47 AM
  • I have just begun reseaching private schools for my daugjhter. She is currently at Montessri Academy in Pre-school. I would like her to attend private school through her entire education. How do I get a scholarship or grant for her? Can I pick any school? When is the deadline? liz, April 6, 2009 5:30 PM
  • okay, I was reading what florence said, and she is totally wrong, I'm applying for boarding school and my parents can't pay for the tuition, and I'm applying because public school isn't helping. sure some public schools may be great, but most suck. at my school: -the teachers have no idea what they're talking about. - and there's 40 kids to a class. so, you obviously know nothing. mary Leahy, April 21, 2009 4:17 PM

  • Public schools with kids that hate each other. Public schools with kids who don't want to be there, harrassing the other student's and teaching staff. Public schools that think about the almighty buck first. Public schools are what America's famous for, but in the past couple decades, Public Schools have been what we are not famous for. Why are so many good, caring families seeking alternatives? They seek alternatives because they CARE, and they know that there is a better choice for their children!! Sara, July 20, 2009 10:32 AM

  • I think we all would like our kids to go to private school. I was looking for scholarships to "help" for my LDGT child because public schools do not teach or cater to "alternative learning" styles for children. I can't afford it, so we just adapt to public school, but then I see all these posts about people that Just want their kids to go to private schools just because they're "great" kids who deserve it. My reasons are for kids who are having trouble and need alternative teaching styles, smaller classrooms, and to help mitigate the abuse my child who's different has suffered at the hands of these "great" kids who are so deserving and bully, pick on, criticize, joke and torture my daughter because she's different. I think we need to take a good look at just what your precious little angels are reallylike and do they really "deserve it?" Sorry, that's for all the beautiful and charming teenage cheerleaders that walk around and trip a kid, ignore them, not talk to them because theyre not cool enough, and for the parents who allow their children to add to my daugther's depression and feelings of suicide. Let's think about people who have real problems for a chance and not create any more. audra, August 6, 2009 11:24 AM
  • Hi, I would love to send my 4 children to a private school. I am a housewife, my husband works but unfortunately it's not enough to cover the expense of a private school. We all want whats best for our children, We want them to get a good education! Unfortunately I'm in the LAUSD district, the schools API scores are not high! I feel like I'm stuck I want to put them in another district but I can because priority goes to the residents, etc... I would love for them to attend private school but I can't afford it! What do you suggest? Financial Aid, scholarships, Grants? I wish I could win the lottery. Please help what do you recommend? God Bless. Erica, August 14, 2009 2:33 AM
  • I'm just here wondering why parents are arguing back and forth instead of focusing on whats best for the kids. Each child is diff, everyones situation is diff, just focus on solutions and stop wasting time arguing. Melissa, August 23, 2009 4:18 PM
  • This is to Florence. I live in an area where public schools are a joke. I went to the school that my children are suppose to go to and I did not get a very good education. I didn't graduate High school for many years after I was suppose to. The Los Angeles Unified School District is the worst around. I wouldn't even let my enemies children come to these schools. My children are getting a much better education in private schools and I am in contact by email and telephone with all my kids teachers. I wouldn't have it anyother way. I have family member that even tell me that I am wasting my money. I do struggle every month to make ends meet but I don't care. My children will go to college and we will see how we will pay for that when we get there. Please, for this of you that swear by public schools, great! You had a good experience, but I didn't and neither did my husband. Pa, September 8, 2009 4:08 PM
  • Ok....let me fill you in. I'm a great student who goes to a PUBLIC SCHOOL.! Yes, public school it may be a great opportunity to get accepted into a private school...but, usually the case is alot of the students can be condescending snobs...thinking they're smarter than everyone else. Most of you who are begging for a scholarship to a PRIVATE SCHOOL(for children) probably don't need private school and guess what it wont get them noticed. My uncle is columbia alumni...in his words youre child will truly be noticed if they are smart. How can I put it more simple? Usually people that can afford to send their children to great private and boarding schools have smart children...and there can be alot of them. It's going to be hard for your child to be recognized as smart when he/she has to be top of the class out of atleast 300 students.Just do what you think is right for you children............... • Can anyone explain why does congress have money to buy personal statues of themselves fund shrimp and cow maneure research and whatever else they can come up with but there are limited funds for education and all the money that they are providing for education are going to schools that nobody seems to be happy with but the unions and the people in charge of dept. of edu, and the nat'l edu assoc. seem to be just sitting there collecting checks and maintaining low standards for the children in public schools systems. Why isn't there a united huge outcry to reform the school system instead of everyone trying to get out of it? miminunya, September 27, 2009 10:14 AM

  • Erica above who responded in august: You know why you don't deserve a scholarship? Because unlike many of us, you can actually afford to sit at home. The funds are limited, instead of trying to get them, continue to live off your husband's income for bills and get up, get out, become an EMPLOYEE, and use the income you make to pay for private school! Leave the funds for those of us who are divorced, widowed, displaced by Katrina, lost our jobs, and otherwise disadvantaged by circumstances outside our control! And the lifelong friendships that may seem cliquey to outsiders is exactly the type of permanent bond missing from today's fluid, ultra-transient societies. School is THE major socializing factor in a child's life after the family in the early years...don't you want to know the other authority set molding your child into who they will be for the rest of their lives is the best influence? Public is good if you can be in a top rated public school zone. But many times the rent or mortgage for such school zones is far outside the level we can afford and sometimes the zone is so far from "civilization" ... Christian teachings Uniform Behavior Lifetime connections/networks Stability and continuity College prep What's not to love? JustOneMoreSingleMother, November 4, 2009 1:03 AM

  • In Boulder,Co. in the Abbey of The Sacred Heart of Mary Church and prior convent is a school called Bridge. It accepts students where they are and promotes Perseverance,Confidence,Knowledge in a nurturing environment. The class room sizes are 4-10, this being a middle/high school grades 6-12. They offer a sliding scale and scholarships are available from Alliance for School Coice which the Bridge school is a partner of. In 2010 only 30% of Public School Students will become independent and successful. This is a staggering statistic. Is your child one of these who will be able with the education to step to the plate with what the Public School system has given them? Check the school on their web site and make the move now. Another school year is slowly but surely winding down.BridgeSchoolBoulder.org Tracy O'Brien, January 21, 2010 11:55 AM

We live in Somerset County NJ and the school is in Union County NJ. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My church told me the Diocese can't help because the school is not in there district. • I'm a single mother of a four year old boy. He will be attending Kindergarten this fall. I am in the Military and we have recently been reassigned to Little Rock, Arkansas. Statistically, the schools here are terrible. I found a private school that seems to be the best option for my son. I'm sure he is just as smart as the next kid, but no matter what, he still deserves the best I can provide for him. It is my choice to keep my Military career because this is what pays the bills and "gives back" to our beautiful country, but I don't think his education should suffer. I've been looking everywhere I can think of to find financial help. I, like most of you, am not made of money. I was given this assignment by Uncle Sam and I'm honestly terrified that my son will end up with a terrible education. I am not here to argue or make judgements like some people seem to be doing. I would just like some answers. If anyone has any information about general private school scholarships/grants, or military scholarships/grants please reply. Thank you in advance for any helpful comments. Cassie, March 14, 2010 9:58 PM

  • I am emailing you in reference to a Scholar Athlete "Xavier Brown" that I have been mentoring since november. Xavier is a senior at Paul Robeson High School in West Philadelphia, a 4 year Varsity starter, 4 year cross country runner, and a 2 year debate member. Xavier currently holds a 3.7 grade point average, National Honor Society memeber, and is the Salutivictorian for his senior class; 2nd to a student with a 3.79 gpa. Xavier is one of the top players in the country his rank is 110 out of the top 150. Xavier has recently been recruited from many colleges/universities some to name are Penn, Columbia, Princeton, Bucknell, Lehigh, St. Francis Pa, New Hampshire, and he has offers from Harvard, Yale and Army. I have talked with him and he has goals to attend a higher university of learning, however Xavier doesn't have the Sat scores to get into a Harvard, or a Yale at the moment. I am currently trying to get him into a prep school some to name are Winchedon, Blair Academy, Hun School of Princeton, however I came across a Prep School coach named Vin Sparacio who coaches at Rise Academy and they've offered Xavier a starting spot. This opportunity would give Xavier the whole summer to do SAT prep to get the score he needs, practice/ train as well as play AAU basketball across the country and open up his recruitment as a reclassified senior. During september until may he would have the chance to compete on a prep school level where college coaches are at every game. His mother cannot afford to send him to a prep school so I am going out of my way to try to raise some money for this kid. The cost of Xavier's tuition would be $14,000 for the whole year at Rise Academy however the coach made him an offer to pay 10,000 total. If any way you can help it would be greatly benefited. Here is the prep school coaches info. Vin Sparacio Rise Academy Head Coach Cell- 347-419-8357 sparacio_vin@yahoo.com THANK YOU! T. Glover Terrance Glover, March 17, 2010 3:31 PM
  • My children are in public school and if it's the last thing I do, I am going to get them out. Public schools are HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Teachers don't care, the parents of the children my kids sit in the classroom with don't care. They want the kids to succeed on all these tests but aren't preparing our kids to take the test. To Florence, you are perfect example of why to not choose public schools. The teacher student ratio is unrealistic. How can one teacher in her mid 80's handle 30 third graders. That is ridiculous. Please help, I need assistance to make sure my children get the education they deserve. Camille, March 26, 2010 10:02 AM
  • I really need to find a schoolarship for my daughter, Because alot of Atlanta and Dekalb county schools are closing. I really don't want to put her in a school where I might feel she's not getting the best out of school, or to many students where she can't get the help she may need. I want the best for my daughters, even tho my youngest is one, I want it for her too when it her turn. I can't afford to move to a better part of Atlanta to find better schools or pay tuition, so how can I find a scholarship for my child's education, to help a low income parent. Please help me Thanks Alot Amirah Amirah, March 31, 2010 9:04 AM
  • Don;t give up, when everyone says you are crazy My wife and I thought we were struggling all alone with private school funding. Our story sounds familiar to those of you who took the time to post. Regardless, we kept our faith in God first. The boys are entering their junior year at RGNS in September. Both made honor roll. One is a campus tour guide. The other is the student council treasurer. Both will be dorm prefects in the fall. Both will stay on their sports teams. Somehow we seem to keep making it. Our family has stayed in tact. We will get our stuff back...After the boys graduate in 2012. Then we will pull our furniture out of storage. LOL. Put your faith and trust in God first. Do not give up the dream when everyone around you is calling you crazy. Stay focused on the real goal at hand..provide a better life for your future, your kids, your reason for doing what you do. The best chance possible is through education. That is the only gift that can never be taken from them! You are going to sacrifice. You are going to feel like you are suffering. In reality you are readjusting your life to prioritize what is most important. Do it for yourself and your family. Do not do it for what others may think or say. What they will never know is what you went through and by that point, wjho really cares. Paul C. Kelly, March 31, 2010 10:56 AM

  • Hi, I need suggestions on where I can apply for financial aid so that my 10 year old can attend a private boarding school that he and I believe would help him live up to his potential. As a single mom, he has way too much free time in the afternoons. I can't put him in afterschool programs because they close before I get off work. I can't allow him that much free time because boys will be boys and unsupervised and bored is a bad combination. He tests very highly, but has poor grades. He's a minority student. The problem I am running into is that, while there are several programs available, most require that he live within a metro area. Living in a rural area does not negate the negative influences available. I understand why these programs are focused on inner city kids, but it's frustrating that there are no programs, that I can find, available. He's a good kid (mostly) with a ton of potential. I believe that being a latch-key kid will disable him from living up to that potential. I believe that being in a structured educational environment 24-7 can provide him the tools he needs. I'm stuck between affording to feed him or affording to feed his future. Doesn't seem like a fair choice. I hope someone reads this and can advise me of other scholarship options not found at NAIS. • Florence, IT"S CALLLED PUBLIC SCHOOLS????????? You obviously went to public school as is evident in your grammar All of you think your kids are so amazing when there probably not. " and "This is why are country has so much debt" THERE not. Dont you mean THEY'RE not and, ARE country? dont you mean OUR country. I think this is reason enough that we do not want OUR kids going to public school. It has nothing to do with them being amazing it has everything to do with giving them a better chance for the good educatiion that you missed out on. " Laura, May 24, 2010 11:15 AM

  • I have two children currently enrolled in a Baltimore City School. They are academically up to/above par and I would like to place them in a school with other children that want to learn. They started in an Anne Arundel County School, however due to my separation; we had to move to Baltimore City. Since then, their zeal and enthusiasm for learning has shifted. I want to be able to enroll them in a school with students that want to learn. They are great kids, and I refuse to allow them to become a product of their environment. In today's society, a lot of standards and morals are being compromised. Nevertheless, I will continue to raise my children with the morals and Christian values that this country was built on. I monitor their television shows, the video games that they play, the music that they listen to and the friends that they choose. In the powerful words of Whitney Houston, "I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way." I cannot afford tuition for them; however I am praying that the Lord will open a door for them to be able to attend a school in the area called “Unseld” School. The location is convenient and I believe it would be a great choice for them. I just need financial assistance. LD Cook, May 27, 2010 6:56 AM

  • I'm a grandmother of an exceptional granddaughter. I stumbled upon this site while looking for funds to pay for her tuition. The emails I just read are quiet similar to our situation. My granddaughter will be a senior in the fall. She has attended a private school since eighth grade and has qualified for some assistance with tuition. After Katrina she relocated to Texas for one school year and was so miserable she came back and has been living with me since. The tuition for her senior year is 17,000.00 she receives assistance of 4,000.00. I am unemployed at the moment after recently continuing my education. Her benefactor was a relative who is recently having significant financial difficulties and just informed us he can no longer pay her tuition. The child is an excellent student and has a wonderful outlook, in spite of the many challenges she has experienced through out her childhood. She is devastated she may not complete her senior year. If anyone has information on funds available for private school in the New Orleans area please email me at Gma52@hotmail.com SKC, May 28, 2010 5:50 PM
  • I am really discouraged by 80% of the comments I've read. How we educate our children is indeed a personal choice. I don't think anyone should be lambasted for trying to do what they think is best for their child(ren), even if, in our opinions it may not be. First of all, I AM a teacher in a public school and certainly it goes without saying that there ARE many teachers who don't care, there ARE teachers who don't know anything-but you find those same things in private schools, don't you. I don't think there's any perfect learning situation. I am a special education teacher in an elementary school that works with students in the general education setting, so I not only work with kids who are struggling, but I work with gifted kids too. I get to see every end of the spectrum and teachers, great and terrible. One thing that I can confirm is that public school is, unfortunately, NOT set up in a way that is beneficial to students who learn differently(newsflash:we all learn differently) or who have more pronounced attention issues. I am on this site because I have a son, who is 15 years old that was diagnosed 2 days ago with ADHD/inattentive type and ODD. Obviously I identified this a while back, being as how I deal with these types of kids daily, but I started to realize that if I didn't do something and quick my son(identified as gifted by the way, if that even makes a difference in this scenario) was NOT going to succeed! I am now at the point where I am looking at EVERY avenue available. I am actually thinking about getting him "tested" so he can receive special ed services since here in GA they can get a voucher to private school, but I don't know if I'm willing to go that route yet. That being said, if anyone has 1) gone that route before 2) has some additional information regarding scholarships that was not included on this site and 3) wants to just keep it positive and assist another person then please email me at trina_72@comcast.net. Good luck to all! Trina, May 30, 2010 12:43 AM

  • Hi, my name is Maegan and I am 15 years old. I'm from McAllen, Texas and have been a student at The White Mountain School for the past two years. My parents financed this through loans but have recently gotten divorced. My father refuses to help us out so my mother is raising myself and my six year old sister on her own. My mother has to pay for her college education, my sister's education, and mine as well as our house, electricity, car, etc. Frankly, we don't have money for groceries let alone a 44k boarding school education. I have been a straight A student all my life because I know the only way to a better life for my family and myself is through education. There are no quality high schools in McAllen, Tx; they are all overpopulated and do not even meet Texas Education standards. My mother can't afford to pay the monthly installments that come with loans and has terrible credit in the first place. I have no family to ask for help because they are all much worse off than we are as many have just moved from Mexico. I've seen that many people post their stories on this website in the hopes that someone will come along and help them out or give them money. I suppose I hope someone will help me out as well. I've received $33,600 in financial aid from The White Mountain school but need 11.5k more and I have absolutely no idea where to get it. The email address I have given is my school email. I check it daily so if anyone would like to contact me about solutions that would be wonderful. Thank you. Maegan Martinez, June 15, 2010 11:13 PM

  • All seeking help. Will try to add a little in the hopes that it might change the way you are going about it. My niece blessed to have receive full scholarships for most of her primary school. She now goes to college on a full with room and board. She worked hard, put her obligations to the school at the top. Attended all games, practices and helped out with charities. She gave back. I have read so many of the comments on this board, understand the need for help. Most don't mention what you or your child would give back. I truly do wish you all would find the help , but I have found in life that the more I give the less I need to worry about God looking out for me. I am not special, with the exception that I have faith. Why not tell people what your children would give in return for this help you all want. Try talking about what you can put into the solution. My niece will go far in life, not because she learned to take, but because she learned to give. Her father and mother are far from being rich. Both working stiffs. My brother works his butt off, first his week job and then his weekend job(s). If he needs to clean yards for people, he will, if he needs to drive someone, he will. There is no job that was beneath him. At times he, his wife & my niece would go & clean someones summer place before the season. His wife cleans houses & offices for a living, both during the week and weekends. All of you can do it, has to come from you taking the lead. Remember sitting at home worrying does not get the job, nor the wisdom. Talk to people, volunteer. You would be amazed at the people you meet when you volunteer. There is always someone in a much smaller boat on a much bigger sea, without a paddle. Count your blessings, you might find that you are walking toward the "What can I do for you" instead of the darkness of "ME ME ME". I pray that you all find the help, I pray more that you all find the love of God and His grace. God bless. Walter Walter Arneson, June 24, 2010 5:24 AM
