Hargrave Alumnus M SGT Thomas Saunders Dies in Training Accident

Master Sergeant Thomas Saunders of the United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC)

The death of Hargrave alumnus Master Sergeant Thomas Saunders of the United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) brings me to this post and something we don’t often talk, or hear about — the boarding boarding school alumni who go on to serve in the armed forces and those who perish while serving.

Sergeant Saunders death strikes chord in this regard. He was a military boarding school alumnus who chose to enlist in the Marine Corps after graduating from Hargrave in May 1999.

“Tom Saunders was a well-known, well-respected and well-liked member of the Hargrave Class of 1999,” Hargrave President Don Broome (Brigadier General, U.S. Army, Ret.) said. “He had a great love for Hargrave and for his Nation. He chose to serve the Nation and demonstrated exceptional leadership deploying to combat multiple times. He truly represents the best of our Hargrave graduates. Tom was a treasure, and he will be sorely missed by our Hargrave family and by our Nation.”

Military school graduates do not necessarily go on to service careers; and, certainly, a smaller percentage boarding school graduates go on to service careers. But, it’s important that we keep in our minds and hearts all those who do.

We, and they, have choices.

The boarding, and military, school alumni who choose to forego the potential riches, and ease of civilian life, in order to serve are quite something. These alumni take their great educations, opportunities, and experiences and elect to sacrifice their personal choices and opportunities for the greater good.

That is something in the modern world.
