Boarding School Winter Olympians: #Sochi2014

SOC_Olympic logoRGBWith the 2014 winter Olympic games open in Sochi, it’s time for my quick list of boarding school alumni participating in the games. It’s always head shaking to see the talent and variety of events in which the boarding school alumni compete. Most fun, of course, is the fact that many learned, competed in and honed their talents in their olympic events while on a boarding campus.

My rough count — 34 winter olympians with boarding school connections are in Sochi.

A quick shout-out to NEPSAC, I’ve compiled my lists manually and on my own. This year NEPSAC published a list; their list was good starting point for this one.

Preemptive apologies if I’ve missed an athlete who should be on this list, please leave a comment or send a note if we need to include someone.

Warren Cummings Smith, who lives in Dedham, Massachusetts, and skis for Estonia, attended Burke Mountain, too. Wonder if there are other non-US Olympians who attended US schools. Bet there might be.

Peter, Thanks for the addition. I rely on readers to help with the list as there’s no central clearinghouse or gather point.

  • amellow

Yes, sure there are folks from the “ski academies” such as Waterville Valley,Green Mountain, Stratton, Burke, National Sports Academy and places like Northwood in Lake Placid.

    • bfisher

      amellow,

Thanks for reading. Do you know if the ski academies work together to publish a list or do any promotional work around their olympians?

  • Smithb

Lowell Whiteman School: Eliza Outtrim ’03(freestyle), Clint Jones (coach ski jumping)

    • bfisher

Thanks for adding to the list.

  • Indian Mountain School

Sasha Rearick ’92, U.S. men’s alpine Head Coach, attended Indian Mountain School

    • bfisher

      Thanks for the addition.

  • Brian your list is incomplete. The school with the most members in the Winter Olympics is Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY. I just finished an article about the 19 Winter Olympians who all attended Northwood School. http://thenorthwoodblogger.com/2014/03/22/andrew-weibrecht-03-continues-chain-champions-spanning-6-decades/
