Kim Loughlin, Bement School (Deerfield, MA) admission director, guides viewers around the Bement campus and through the concept of a junior boarding school.

Bement teaches boarding and day students in kindergarten through ninth graded with the boarding program open to students in grades 3-9.

Academics feature small classes with twelve students on average with each student placed at an appropriate level of challenge.

Noteable academic areas include language and sciences. Bement pays special attention to math and science preparation for success at the secondary level and beyond. Bement sixth graders take introduction to latin. In seventh grade, language options broaden to include, Latin, Chinese, French, and Spanish.

Art is woven into every student's day. All students take fine arts, performing arts, music and art history courses every year. Upper school music offerings include concert band, choir, and orchestra. Student artwork and performances are shared continually throughout the school year. Ninth grade concludes with a self portrait and personal statement as part of a Bement student's growth and maturation process.

Sharing and community are the foundations of Bement residential life. Bement's 40 boarders (20 boys/20 girls) live as large family. Each dorm is made up of 10 students and two dorm parents/families creating the consistency and connection of a family. Dorm parent know "who's doing what?" and "how everyone feels and is doing."

Boarding students study each evening in the library for an hour-and-a-half after dinner and once during the weekend.

Bement weekends feature a balance of "kid" and cultural activities. The Pioneer Valley offeres the great resources of the Five Colleges- Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire and UMass Amherst. And, of course there's downtime to play, read, and be still.
