Baylor Provides Leadership Trips to Enable Self-Discovery
A select group of Baylor juniors and seniors have the opportunity travel each year to Washington, D.C., Jamaica, and Colorado as part of the school’s emphasis on personal leadership growth. Each trip is fully funded by the school.
The Jim Pearce Outdoor Leadership Trip/Silverton, Colorado
Senior Sydney Rupe, international club president, joined 11 classmates for nine days of backpacking and mountaineering in Silverton, Colorado. This leadership trip was established in 1992 through the generosity of Jim Pearce (’66) to honor Baylor students of admirable character whose selfless efforts might otherwise go unrecognized by the school or by their peers.
The Servant Leadership Trip/Kingston, Jamaica
Each year, 10 students are selected through an application process to spend their spring break in Kingston, Jamaica. The students will work with orphans, the homeless, and the elderly as part of the Jamaica Servant Leadership trip. This spring will mark the fourteenth year of the trip and the first year that expenses have been paid by the school. In conjunction with the trip, students selected for the honor also raise money for the Jamaica Education Fund, which helps send children in Kingston to school.
David M. Abshire Civic Leadership Trip/Washington, D.C.
The David M. Abshire Civic Leadership Trip to Washington, D.C., is Baylor’s most recent leadership immersion trip. Each spring, 12 rising seniors are selected through an application process for the honor, which provides the opportunity to live on the campus of George Washington University for a week in June, shadow D.C.-area Baylor alums in careers as diverse as graphic design and naval analysis, and meet with the professional staff at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC). The trip, in its third year, is named in honor of David M. Abshire (’44), president of the CSPC and a former U.S. ambassador and aide to President Ronald Reagan. Experience Baylor Summer Camp
Boarding camps are becoming more and more popular by parents and young people alike. And now is the time to start planning for summer camp. At Baylor, we provide a wide range of summer camp opportunities including team sports camp, sports camp for individuals such as golf and swimming, and Leadership U. Each camp provides young people the opportunity to learn from experienced coaches and train in top notch facilities.
Young people attending our overnight sports camps get to experience independence in a safe and supervised setting. Campers live in one of Baylor’s modern dormitories, with 24-hour supervision by boarding camp staff. Buffet meals are provided by our dining hall staff and each camper has the ability to enjoy the student center which offers the perfect spot for fun. Dates and details for our various camps can be viewed on our summer camp page.
We encourage anyone who is interested in attending a boarding camp this summer to experience Baylor Summer Camp. Contact Carol Huckaby at (423) 757-2616 to learn more or simply visit our summer camp page for more information.
