Sedbergh School Turns 70
We saw the Sedbergh School, one of our Canadian boarding school colleagues, recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. I didn’t know much about Sedbergh, but I like what I read.
An upper school with grades 7-12, Sedbergh began as a boys school, becoming coed in 1989.
“…T.J. Wood envisioned the school as “a new school, an honest to goodness country school, in a region of hills, lakes and forests where a young person could savor the benefits of country living as ancillary to the serious business of schooling” and that is exactly what they built. With the help of Jack Rabbit Johansen, the location was found, and the school was literally carved from the heart of the rocky mountain…
…What sets Sedbergh apart are its unique philosophy and its approach to connecting with its students. Boundaries are set, but not in stone and students are given the freedom to volunteer study ideas and follow new directions. Structured independence is strongly encouraged and readily accepted by most students. Recognizing that not all students will excel in the classroom, each individual is encouraged to explore and develop their strengths, improve weaknesses and discover hidden talents.” (MSW)
