Fork Union Military Academy: Building an Online Community
We came across a school website that got us to stop and take a look the other day. The Fork Union Military Academy’s site makes the most use out of more web tools than any school site that I’ve seen in recent memory. Beyond their embrace of web 2.0 technologies, we also like the fact that kids/students are clearly part of their intended audience. I think- visually- the site clearly appeals to applicant age viewers.
On the site, they incorporate a number of features to connect and build their community. From podcasting about a variety of topics to utilizing the FUMA 411 Forum- they’re the first school we’ve found that uses a message board- the site is well positioned to deliver the news of the day. Take the forum, it presents information both to current and applying students; provides discussion sections for family and friends; The Chaplain’s Corner keeps the extended community involved with the schools spiritual work; and alumni have a dedicated section. We like their willingness to start and provide a public place on the site for all members of the FUMA family to meet and exchange ideas/news.
Some of the discussion dates show that it’s still developing, but it allows the wide school community to stay connected and maintain a feel for campus happenings.

Cutting edge and very professional just like the school!
The Fork Union site is a great tool for parents as their kids are living away from home. It is a great way to find out what is going on at the campus and also to feel connected with their children. The FUMA 411 serves as a great support group for parents missing their kids!

The salvation of America is dependent on strength and integrity of it’s future leaders. There is no better prepartory academic institution than FUMA at producing these future leaders. All of the other private and public schools across the country can and should learn from FUMA.
Fifty-five years ago a kid from rural Virginia and a kid from New York city were put in the same room at Fork Union. Fifty-five years later we are best friends. We were each a success in our lives, raised our families and have left a trail to be followed. What more can be said on behalf of Fork Union Military Academy ?

From a coal-mining town in southwestern Virginia, Fork Union began the initial grooming for my 22 years of military service and 20 additional years as a Dept of Army Civilian. Fork Union is the primary building block in any young man’s life, no matter what his future aspirations. Thank you FUMA for my great start in life…..which continues through today. Class of ‘56.

Fuma web site I couldn’t survie without. even this summer I’ve gone on often. Fourm 411 wish more used site. Last years growth in son was wonderful, to indepent getting use to. Pesonsonal thanks to all middle school staff, he always had great things to say. his growth in Christ is awesome beyond what I’d expect. We both look forward to upcoming year.

The Academy is the best of everything, too much to say for a blog.
In summary it’s a little bit of basic training, in a safe college & moral environment. From my perspective, it’s a mini- WestPoint.

Having lost my father at an early age, it was my wish to attend a military academy. My family and I started a search which included academies throughout the nation and Fork Union
was chosen above all.
I found a school steeped in tradition,administered by the finest
educators with a strong emphasis on building the mind, body and spirit of each member of the corp of cadets.
It was truly an honor and privilege to have had the opportunity to attend.
I attended FUMA for four years and graduated in 1983. My Father attended in 1955, and to this day, he credits his accomplishments and I credit mine to Fork Union. I try to attend every year for alumni day, and just attended my 25th reunion in May 2008. Boy, how time flies!
I can honestly say that the friends you make while attending, faculty and cadets, will last forever. I still keep in touch with and spend time with most of my friends, and consider several of them as “brothers”.
If anyone reading this is considering attending, take my word, it’s tough, and at times you will wonder why you are there, but in time, like a good crossword puzzle, it all comes together, and you will look back and realize that it was one of the best experiences of your life! Hurah FUMA!
FUMA turned both my boys around 180 degrees. Period.
There is no true way to express the changes that take place in a young man’s life as he finishes being his parent’s Son and begins being a societal member and eventual leader. Fork Union is represented in the matriculating class of the service academies, the first round of the NFL, the space program, doctors, lawyers, leaders around the world. FUMA will not make you a better person but, there you will be exposed to the tools which can be utilized to bring out the best in you! It is the place where leaders and innovators are forged, the change in each young man is supercharged. Not everyone leaving there does great things but we are ALL given the keys to greatness.
Singularly the best decision I have ever made – attending FUMA.

Creating a website for a boys military schools is reaching out not only into the community but through other parts of the state. It is true that Fork Union Military Academy is one of the best military school and need to outreach other state to know what are their capabilities and capacity to accommodate your teen to be in a military school.
