Westover Students Inspired To Action
Westover Students Attend 18th Annual Prejudice Reduction ConferenceAnna Dydzuhn ‘11 and Hannah Acheson-Field '11 were inspired by workshops they attended at the 18th Annual Prejudice Reduction Conference on May 21 in New Haven, CT.
After attending an opening ceremony that included a video about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan, the students participated in a day of workshops on a variety of topics, from autism to immigration and from homosexuality to the Holocaust.
"Going to this conference was simply remarkable in that hundreds of high school students from around the state from so many backgrounds were able to speak so openly with each other," said Hannah. "I learned a great deal of information, and I would love to bring so much of it back to Westover."
"The conference was an incredible opportunity," said Anna. "It was a good overview of the problems we're facing in our world today. It was so inspiring to see so many people with such genuine devotions to their causes. I particularly enjoyed watching the film and play on Darfur because the presenters had such a clear passion for the cause," she added. "I am so impressed with the Hamden High students for putting all of this together by themselves."
The conference focused on student activism and how students can help reduce prejudice among people around the world. The conference was sponsored by Hamden High School's Human Relations Club.
The students were accompanied by Rachel Bashevkin, Westover's Associate Director of Studies.
