a visit from travis roy

Fifteen years ago, alumnus Travis Roy ’95, could be seen practicing with the Tabor Seawolves on the ice rink.  A star athlete and student with a promising future in hockey, Roy graduated Tabor and went on to play at Boston University, receiving an ice hockey scholarship.  Little did Roy know his first eleven seconds of his first shift would be his final eleven seconds playing hockey.   Twenty-year-old Roy jetted out of the box and onto the ice, charging at the puck, a hustle not uncommon for Roy.  Eleven seconds later, Roy was lying on the ice unable to move after a North Dakota player dodged his check, sending him head first into the boards.  Roy cracked his fourth vertebra, leaving him a quadriplegic.  This accident marked the end of a dream, but the beginning for a whole new saga for Roy.  By staying positive, Roy found an opportunity that would allow him to be an inspiration to everyone.
On Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Travis Roy will be on campus to address the Tabor community in the Fireman Center, and to oversee the 14th Annual Travis Roy Cup hockey game against St. Sebastian’s at 2:30 p.m.  The proceeds of this annual fundraiser will go to the Travis Roy Foundation, an organization that aids people with spinal cord injuries.  Donations can be given to any varsity hockey player, as each member of the team is trying to raise at least $25 for the foundation.  The Tabor community welcomes Travis Roy and looks forward to hearing his inspiring story.
