Kule’s AP Spanish class tested their foreign language abilities against a tough audience – a group of 3-5 year olds from local Turmin Elementary School’s Head Start program.
After a first semester assignment to read and analyze children’s storybooks written in Spanish, the class members were given the task of conceptualizing, writing, illustrating and finally reading their own books to native Spanish speakers. According to Sra. Kule, her hope was to help her students explore “children’s literature with a critical eye regarding the values communicated to the reader” as well as to use “a love of Spanish as a bridge to communication in the 21st century.”
Although the group of children was younger than initially targeted, Sra. Kule felt their innocence and bilingual nature made the project a success. Her hope is that the FVS students also draw inspiration from the project in many ways.
"My hope is that this project continues for our students as they explore service to others; the viewing of children's literature, or any literature, with a critical eye regarding the values communicated to the reader; a love of Spanish as a bridge to communication in the 21st century; and the role of children in modern society – their rights, protection and healthy growth."
This was the fifth year Fountain Valley School Spanish students have visited Head Start classrooms to read their storybooks. Fourteen students participated: Natalie Anderson '08, Kailey Blunt '09, Jessica Bolin '08, William Bryan '08, Hannah Cain '08, Ricardo Castanon '10, Julian Dillon '08, Erin Duff '08, Tyler Dulin '09, Jeannie Folan '08, Doug Koenig '09, Sophia Nunez '09, Clara Stiefel '08, Madison Stuart '09.
