History
| Founded in 1909, Blue Ridge School is an all boys, all boarding, college preparatory school near Charlottesville, Virginia. Blue Ridge School is dedicated to providing a sound college-prep education for capable and willing young men. Blue Ridge is a supportive, structured community where self-esteem is founded upon solid accomplishment in the classroom, on the athletic fields, in the arts and in a host of co-curricular activities. We are experts in boys’ education. Like most private schools, we boast of small classes and personal attention - but our academic program is based on research that works best with boys. Blue Ridge is one of the few all boys, all boarding schools in the US. All of our programs - academic, athletic, outdoor - are intelligently crafted just for boys. Every teacher at Blue Ridge knows the most current research about how boys learn; and they apply it in their classrooms, in the dorms, and on the playing fields. Blue Ridge boys are more comfortable taking intellectual risks. With no girls, guys can simply be themselves. Blue Ridge boys are instructed by a faculty well-known for their dedication to students and to the Blue Ridge community. Several on our faculty have longstanding tenure that spans decades and who coach our younger faculty to become better teachers. All of our teachers give individual attention to each student to help him succeed. Class sizes average around 8-9 students. We emphasize the development and refinement of individual talents and skills essential to each boy's success in academics and in life. Blue Ridge School understands that athletics is an important part of many boys’ lives. We offer 20 varsity, junior varsity and squire programs in football, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, wrestling, baseball, and track and field. The school also offers a wide range of non-athletic options for those who are interested in learning more about the outdoors, or the arts. 2012 Highlights • Lacrosse made it to the state championship finals this spring. Our senior captain was named Virginia Independent Conference (VIC) Player of the Year, and was selected All-State. He was also Division I VISAA US Lacrosse All-American. • Basketball won the 2012 VIC Championship. Coach Bill Ramsey was named VIC Coach of the Year. • Production of Oliver by the BRS Players takes theatre on campus to a new level • This spring several students and teachers traveled to Peru to explore the land of the Incas, and gaining a broader understanding of the diverse land and culture Peru has to offer. • This summer, a group of students and teachers backpacked in Montana – for a week of hiking and fly fishing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. • Phase one of Gateway Trails has been completed. More than two miles of best-of-class multi-sport mountain bike trails now circle the forested perimeter of the School’s main campus. • The Baron Athletic Complex initiative to construct a new track and soccer fields is underway with initial gifts. • Remodeling of the Student Center into a multi-faceted community space, led by a committee of students and faculty with a gift from the BRS Parents Council. Blue Ridge School is located near the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, and is close to Shenandoah National Park. Our Outdoor Education Program takes advantage of the 750-acre campus and offers a number of outdoor activities, including competitive mountain biking, canoeing, rock climbing, disc golf, and much more. The program aims to promote an appreciation for the natural environment, physical and cognitive growth, and enhance the overall development of our students.
