History

Since 1845, Tilton School has been a fixture of the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. It opened in Northfield as a secondary boarding and day school for boys and girls. The School was originally named the New Hampshire Conference Seminary, and it opened in September 1845 with 130 students – 74 boys and 56 girls. A fire destroyed the School in 1862, and it was relocated to the town of Sanborn Bridge (Tilton). In 1886, another fire burned the “gentlemen’s boarding house” to the ground, and Knowles Hall was dedicated in 1888 to replace it. The School became known as Tilton School in 1923. From the beginning, Tilton School was founded on the premise that people were at the core of the Tilton Experience. From as far back as the end of the 19th century, Tilton School was devoted to athletics, culture and outdoor activities – believing in the notion of educating the whole student – a tradition proudly carried on today through the integration of curriculum and extracurricular activities. Tilton’s campus today, which stretches over 146 acres and features 27 buildings, combining charming 19th-century architecture with modern facilities and amenities. Throughout its history, Tilton has helped young people find their way to adulthood with a consistent emphasis on personal integrity, discipline, curiosity, hard work, service to others and a commitment to learning. It is this proud history and those fundamental values that form both the cornerstone of Tilton’s strength and the springboard for its evolution to the next level.

Considering Financial Aid?

Schools administer their financial aid individually. The keys to seeking financial aid are:

  1. Planning, including dedicating time to sit-down and work through the paperwork and process
  2. Communicating with the admission and financial aid officers at the school
  3. Completing the paperwork and forms early and accurately (forms and paperwork can differ between schools)
  4. Meeting the financial aid deadline (it's early).
