In 1966 Joe Gauld, a seasoned educator in traditional private schools, founded Hyde School after realizing that the singular focus on achievement in American education wouldn’t necessarily lead all students to reach their fullest potential and was even doing a disservice to some students.
Gauld saw students with innate ability achieving high marks in classes and athletics but lacking integrity, genuine curiosity, and concern for their peers, and subsequently failing to thrive in life after college.
Meanwhile, Gauld worked with other students embodying the effort, grit, honesty and work ethic necessary for success, who were at the time receiving below average marks, but he found were very successful in life after college.
Today, Hyde School continues to value effort over achievement and attitude over aptitude. Instead of building a curriculum around five subjects, Hyde focuses on five words: Courage, Integrity, Leadership, Curiosity, and Concern.
Located in coastal Bath, Maine, Hyde serves students in grades 9-12 and post-graduate studies.
Hyde offers a wide range of courses, including AP, Honors, College Credit, Summer and Orientation programs.
However, at Hyde School, academics are only part of what we teach. Students get the tools they need to prosper and grow in this challenging world. That’s because our approach to education is entirely different. Our teachers focus on helping students reveal their character and develop the confidence they need to succeed in high school, college and beyond.
And the way we teach is different, too. We focus on building a student's inner leadership. This includes their self awareness: what are my strengths? What is my vision? What are my obstacles?, Helping them to have public speaking confidence, the importance of taking on challenges outside one’s comfort zone, meaningful relationships: understanding what they are and how to create them, and the family context: understanding the dynamics and influence of my family.
And, unlike any other school, we involve parents and the entire school community in the discovery process. As a result, Hyde students and families strive to realize their fullest potential and are uniquely prepared to navigate the tough choices they face in everyday life.
