Jan 27, 2008 -- An article in The Village Voice’s Educational Supplement celebrates the efforts of the City Squash program, which helps New York’s urban youth learn to play the sport that can help them gain entrance to private preparatory schools. The article, “The Chemistry of Squash: What a Racket — Giving Urban Kids a Shot at Premier Prep Schools,” was written by Michael Rymer and published in the New York weekly’s Jan. 15th issue. Westover is listed among those schools in the Village Voice article that have provided opportunities for students who have participated in the City Squash program.
One of City Squash's main competitors, Street Squash, another New York City squash program for urban youth, was at Westover on Monday, January 21, to play an informal match against players in Westover’s Squash program, including Myriam Kelly ’11, a former player in the City Squash program who is now the #4 player on Westover’s Varsity Squash team. Also playing in the match was Samantha Matos ’10, who is #2 on Westover’s Varsity squad and an alumna of the Street Squash program.
Westover’s Varsity Squash’s record now stands at 10-1, after it hosted a tri-meet against teams from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, CT, and Loomis Chaffee from Wethersfield, CT, on Saturday, Jan. 19th. In its first match against Sacred Heart, Westover escaped a tight situation and scraped by with a 4-3 win. Sacred Heart then defeated Loomis 5-2. The tri-meet concluded with Westover’s match with Loomis, a team eager to avenge its 7-0 loss to Westover earlier in the season. Although Loomis came out strong, noted Westover Coach Allen Fitzsimmons, it was unable to overcome any of Westover’s squad and Westover won the match 7-0. Moving to a record of 10-1 on the season, the Westover team has now reached a season high win total, with six matches remaining. Sam Matos is the only remaining undefeated player at 11-0, and will look to keep her streak alive in a tough match at home vs. Westminster on Friday, Jan. 25th.
