Wildcats Storm the Fields
Westover Fall Sports Off to Impressive Start

The Wildcats defeated Cheshire Academy 6-3 on Sept. 24th. Alex Sutter ’09 had two goals and one assist, Lindsay Cunningham ’10 had one goal and one assist, Myriam Kelly ’11 had two goals and one assist, and Ama Achiaw ’11 had one goal and one assist. Banke Otunba-Payne ’11 had ten saves.
On Oct. 1st, the team dropped a tough decision to Greens Farms, 3-5, despite two goals by Tori Stratton ’10. On Oct. 1st, the team dominated Chase 5-0. Alex Sutter ’09, Myriam Kelly ’11, Ama Achaiw ’11, and Lindsay Cunningham ’10 all scored, Alex scoring twice. They continued their winning ways by defeating Miss Hall’s 3-0 on Oct. 4th. Alex scored two goals, Myriam scored off of an assist from Ama, and Lindsay added an assist. Banke Otumba-Payne ’11 made four saves.
Cross Country
On Sept. 24th Cross Country swept Chase, Gunnery and Millbrook. The scores were Westover, 26; Chase, 32; Gunnery, 95; Millbrook, 143. Sarah Krueger ’12 fought through a close race to win 1st place out of a field of 37 runners. Westover also scored with Jenni Gerard ’10 in 3rd, Chloe Rossano ’09 in 4th, Christine Callahan ’09 in 8th, and Miriam Muniz-Ruiz ’10 in 10th.
At Cross Country’s first home meet on Oct. 4th, Westover earned a 2nd place finish, behind Canterbury by only 10 points and ahead of Miss Hall’s by 28. Chloe Rossano ’09 placed 3rd, Sarah Krueger ’12 in 5th, Jenni Gerard ’10 in 6th, and Christine Callahan ’09 in 11th.
Varsity Field Hockey
The Wildcats rebounded against Miss Hall’s on Oct. 4th, following a tough 0-5 loss to Choate on Oct. 1st, despite Rose Bradley ’12 making 17 saves in net. In the contest with Miss Hall’s, the team put forth a great offensive effort. Katy Norfleet ’11 started the scoring assisted by Sam Matos ’10. Sam proceeded to add her own goal and another assist. Sara Arno ’10, Claire Murphy ’10, and Liz Flanagan ’09 (assisted by Kat Dunham ’10) rounded out the scoring. The game final was 5-1.
JV Soccer
JV Soccer dominated Taft’s thirds team on Sept. 24th, with eight different players scoring for the Wildcats. Melissa Hall ’12, Raina Garcia ’09, Isabelle Byusa ’09, Bethany Simmonds ’12, Morgan Winston ’10, Alana Fitts ’11, Jenna Kowalski ’12, and Anna-Marie Unschuld ’09. The game final was 8-0. The team earned another win defeating Choate’s thirds team on Oct. 1st. Raina, Alana, and Isabelle all found the back of the net.
JV Field Hockey
JV Field Hockey lost to a tenacious Canterbury squad 0-2 on Sept. 22nd. The team earn its first goal of the season vs. Rumsey Oct. 1st when Emeline Carlisle ’12 scored for the Wildcats, assisted by Eliana Wasser ’12 and Molly Cason ’12. Ciera Martinez ’11 had 14 saves. The game final was 1-5.
Thirds Soccer
On Sept. 24th, the Thirds Soccer team traveled to Miss Porter’s and both teams played very well. Miss Porter’s took an early lead with a goal in the first half. During the last 10 minutes of the first half the Westover Wildcats kept the pressure on Porter’s defense. Early in the second half, Anna Kang ’12 was able to power in a shot to tie the score at 1-1. Miss Porter’s then scored to pull one ahead, ending the day at 1-2. Thirds Soccer played a spirited game at home on Oct. 4th against Miss Hall’s, which ended in a draw, 0-0.
