By Joan Anthony
May 12, 2008 -- Westover senior Hannah Laymon has been named a 2008 National Merit Scholar, a distinction that puts her among less than one-fifth of 1% of all students in the country who took the qualifying 2007 Preliminary SAT.
The daughter of Brent Laymon and Sarah Passell of Danbury, CT, Hannah has been awarded a $2,500 college scholarship from the National Merit program. Hannah was an exchange student at Lycee Europeen, in Villers-Cotterets, France, in the fall term and participates in Westover’s Glee Club, Chamber Chorus, and Chantarelle, one of Westover’s a cappella singing groups. She plans to attend Columbia University in the fall.
In the fall of 2006, more than 1.4 million students nationwide took the qualifying 2007 Preliminary SAT. Of those, 15,000 were named Finalists, and only 2,500 were named National Merit Scholars.
