Jan 28, 2008 -- Saint Andrew’s School is proud to announce that five of its students have been accepted for publication in the anthology A Celebration of Young Poets, published by Creative Communications of Logan, Utah.
At Saint Andrew’s School, the contest winners are Aleksa D’Orsi (Grade 9) with the poem Goodbye to the Purple Sky, Nicholas Mishkin (Grade 11) with the poem Love to the Point, Dianna Cohen (Grade 11) with the poem Droplets of a Caressing Wrath, John Cleland (Grade 10) with the poem Anniversary, and Corbin Orr (Grade 12) with Alleviate.
“We are proud of our students for submitting their work to outside critics for publication,” stated Phyllis Merrill, Upper School Academic Dean. “When I think of all the demands we place upon our students, I am really impressed that they take the time to craft poetry and submit it for publication. Saint Andrew’s is indeed thrilled to have these budding poets in our midst.”
Creative Communication is devoted to the promotion of writing, teaching and appreciation of poetry and writing. Since 1993, Creative Communication has sponsored poetry contests. In 2004, Creative Communication also started having essay contests. For each contest over $70,000 is awarded to students in grades K-12 and adult poets and $17,000 to schools. The intent of each contest is to reward creative students.
The top entries in the contest are published in anthologies that record the insights of today's young writers. This is a contest in which the judges are professional educators and poets. The judges meet the goal of being selective enough so that it is an honor to be accepted, yet not so exclusive that it is discouraging to enter, by rejecting more than 50% of the entries received.
Creative Communication also works closely with teachers throughout the country through the publishing of Poetic Power. Having collected hundreds of strategies that teachers use to promote poetry in the classroom, these ideas are organized in a bi-annual newsletter called Poetic Power. This newsletter is then emailed to thousands of language arts teachers in the United States and Canada.
