Skiing-Snowboarding Team Dominates the Slopes

Led by coaches Brett Rubenstein and Aaron Schubach, the skiing-snowboarding team had an incredibly successful season on the slopes.

Aug 01, 2008 -- Led by coaches Brett Rubenstein and Aaron Schubach, the skiing-snowboarding team had an incredibly successful season on the slopes. Twenty-eight athletes participated in daily practices and weekend ski trips, resulting in a little more than one-third of the team qualifying for the 2008 NASTAR National Championships. While the team had some veteran racers, most of the new athletes to the 2008 squad had little, if any, racing experience. The Danes do not participate in Colorado high school association races (but may in the future) but they compete as a NASTAR club team. This season the team earned a total of 198 medals (two platinum, 41 gold, 83 silver, 72 bronze) in 232 races at Keystone and Breckenridge. At the end of the winter athletic season, FVS was ranked 63rd out of approximately 1,500 club teams nationally.

The NASTAR National Championships were held in Steamboat Springs, Colo., March 13-16, and more than 1,300 racers competed. As this was the same weekend as Interim, FVS skiers/snowboarders could not attend. Alpine ski racers qualify by earning a rank in the top three in their age and gender category in their division at any NASTAR resort as of Feb. 18, 2008. For Alpine skiers, there are four divisions and racers are placed by NASTAR based on handicap (Platinum Division, Gold Division, Silver Division or Bronze Division)

The non-Alpine rankings are used to qualify snowboarders, telemarkers and physically challenged racers for nationals. Participants within these disciplines qualify if they are ranked in the top 200 in their age and gender category in their respective rankings as of Feb. 18, 2008.

Max Burch ’11 (Atlanta, Ga.) earned the FVS boys coaches award. The award goes to a skier/snowboarder who embodied the team’s motto “Go big or go home” and made the biggest overall impact this season, both on and off the slope. On the slope, they pushed themselves hard to improve their race times and racked up the points for the FVS team in NASTAR club racing. Off the slope their work ethic in practice, enthusiasm, positive attitude and dedication to the program set an example for their teammates. Burch was the top point earner for FVS in NASTAR team points, and racked up 18 medals in 18 races, including 15 gold, two silver and one bronze, and he had the second lowest handicap (second fastest race time) on the team. He qualified for the 2008 NASTAR National Championships and proudly represented his home town of Atlanta all season. Claire Qubain ’09 (Gardner) was the female recipient. She was the second highest point earner for FVS in NASTAR team points, and racked up nine medals in nine races, including two platinum and seven gold, and she had the lowest handicap (fastest race time) on the team. She qualified for the 2008 NASTAR National Championship as both an alpine skier and as a telemark skier, and ended the season ranked third in the nation out of 139 female telemark racers.
