History of the SchoolIt was Theodate Pope Riddle's lifelong dream to build "an indestructible school for boys," which combined the best of Old England with the best of New England. She realized her aim with red sandstone quarried from School grounds and the model of a 16th-century Cotswald village. In the early 1900's, Mrs. Riddle purchased the land for her School -- which was known as the Old Farms properties. Mrs. Riddle began working on her school in 1915 when she had a brush with death on the Lusitania. By 1919, her plans were completed and in 1921 construction of Avon Old Farms School was begun. The school was then founded in 1927 with 40 boys in attendence. |
