History of the School

Founded in 1886 in a home on South Main Street in Concord, NH, the school was first named St. Mary's School for Girls. One of the most remarkable events in the School's history took place in 1935 when Dorothy McLane, the fabled headmistress known as "Aunt Dot," moved the entire school - in the middle of the Great Depression! - to a mountainside in Bethlehem, NH. The move was to offer students a chance to live in and with things greater than themselves. The awareness of being part of something much larger than oneself - a planet, a mountain range, town, team or a tightly knit community - would help students form perspective. The school became coed in 1970 and today, more than a half century later, the process Aunt Dot envisioned is still taking place.
