History of the School

Marin Academy is a college preparatory coeducational day school located in central San Rafael, California. MA was founded in 1971 by a group of parents and faculty who believed in a strong community, a challenging and nourishing academic environment, and the importance of fostering a sense of responsibility within a diverse community. It was then, and is now a school which seeks to balance its commitment to providing an outstanding academic curriculum alongside a variety of challenging experiences - among them athletics, Outings, Minicourse and service learning - which, taken as a whole, constitute a Marin Academy education. The school has always held a preeminent position in the arts and every student is required to take two years of classes in the performing or visual arts. Marin Academy remains, resolutely, a place that provides, in the words of a parent, "a safe, supportive, energetic, and risk-taking environment for young people to discover who they are and who they will become."
