School Profile

Buxton School History

Buxton School was founded by Ellen Geer Sangster in 1928 as a coeducational country day school in Short Hills, New Jersey. In 1947 the high school was moved to Mrs. Sangster's family estate in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and formed anew as a boarding school. The first Williamstown enrollment of twenty-two students included nineteen from Buxton-Short Hills, and all but one member of the first faculty followed from the New Jersey school -- testimony to the dedication and commitment of those involved with Buxton.
