History of the School

Founded more than 264 years ago, West Nottingham is an independent boarding and day school - the oldest boarding school in the nation. West Nottingham’s early roster of graduates includes many of the most prominent colonial Americans, including two signers of the Declaration of Independence. WNA offers a rigorous college-preparatory program on a beautiful campus near the Chesapeake Bay, just an hour from Baltimore & Philadelphia. With small classes, faculty that love to teach, and students from throughout the region & around the world, we invite you to learn more about our vibrant & rewarding (& fun!) learning community. For 264 years, West Nottingham Academy has helped young people prepare for higher education, responsible citizenship and develop a life-long love of learning. Recent campus improvements include renovation and expansion of Rush House and the construction of Durigg Plaza, an outdoor meeting space for students and visitors to campus. Improvements also include expansion of the school's Culture Credit Program requiring greater exposure to the arts, a newly developed academic schedule with expanded teaching time for English and the sciences, and a new Service Learning requirement to expand experiential learning opportunities. The Academy enjoys a quiet, rural setting and supplements its overall program with the regular use of the recreational and cultural resources of the Baltimore-Philadelphia area. West Nottingham Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Maryland State Department of Education. The Academy is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools and The Association of Boarding Schools.
