The Webb School History

The Webb School-- Sawney Webb's goal was to build moral character, make ladies and gentlemen of his students, and prepare them for any challenge that may come their way. This has been accomplished for over 135 years through a solid liberal arts education, a strong sense of honor, and an interactive school community. The Webb School has has produced 10 Rhodes Scholars and its graduates have gone on to attend prestigious colleges and universities across the nation and to lead important, successful and fulfilling lives in business, education, and the arts. It is our intention to keep this tradition alive by providing a sound education combined with high moral values.

The Webb School Notes

Community Life
Webb is more than a school; it becomes your home. Our close-knit community fosters the development of lasting friendships not only among students, but also between students and faculty. Students also learn a great deal about responsibility, not just for themselves, but also for their community.

Honor Code
The Honor Code is an essential part of a Webb education. In fact, Webb graduates used the principals of Webb’s honor code to implement the honor code at Princeton. Webb’s honor code is upheld by an honor council, which is comprised of students and advised by a faculty member. A position on the honor council is the most important position at Webb.

Academics
Webb students are academic achievers. They’re finalists for National Merit Scholarships and National Achievement Scholarships. Their SAT scores are well above the national averages. Why do our students do so well? They’re talented, but they’re also motivated. Everyone pushes everyone else to try harder, and if a student is having trouble in a subject, others step in to help. That kind of support makes Webb a school where you don’t just ask for answers, you learn to ask more of yourself.

Faculty
With an average class size of 12 (7:1 student-teacher ratio), our teachers have time to focus their energy where it belongs – on encouraging and teaching every student. They get to know you, so they know when you need more help and when you need bigger challenges. You get to know them, too. In class and on the field, on trips and in the dorms, the teachers you have at Webb become friends you’ll keep long after you’ve graduated.

Academics
Webb’s offering of AP and Honors classes ensures that our students will always have a demanding schedule to tackle. We also have the flexibility to balance a schedule with AP and college-prep level courses to match a student’s aptitude. Our high standards across the board ensure that Webb graduates are not only prepared for the challenges of higher education, but also for demands of a changing world.

Fine Arts
Other opportunities in the fine arts include the drama program that performs two full productions each year, choir, string ensemble, two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. Each of these programs will be housed in our new Fine Arts Center, set to open in November of 2006.

Athletics
Our students are competitive, and they get recognized for it. They’ve been named Academic All-Americans and All-Americans, and they’ve gone on to play their sport at the college level. Webb’s athletics teach students the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. With the majority of our students playing at least one sport, the opportunity to participate and learn these lessons is open to every student.

Webb is located in the small, rural community of Bell Buckle, located 50 miles Southeast of Nashville, TN
